Modulo's Interview with Rachel Tidd (Founder of Wild Learning)

Meet Rachel Tidd. Special Ed teacher, homeschool mom, and entrepreneur, Rachel created Wild Learning, the #1 nature-based math and literacy curriculum to use at home with kids.

This week, we had a fireside chat (literally), with Rachel Tidd, founder of Wild Learning.

Wild Learning is a nature-based math and reading curriculum that parents can use to teach their kids as a supplement or replacement to traditional skills.

It’s a wonderful choice for families with hands-on learners looking for challenging, fun, mastery-based curriculum that doesn’t rely on screen time.

Wild Math

In part 1, we go in-depth with Wild Math, how Rachel created the curriculum, who its a good fit for, how to communicate with children around math, power hours common core, ADHD, giftedness dyscalculia and empowering parents to teach math if they don’t feel like they’re “not a math person.”

Wild Reading

In Part 2, we talk about Wild Reading, how it’s different from the way literacy is taught in schools, the “science of reading,” differences in the ways in which individual children learn to read, when children teach themselves to read and when they don’t, how to help your child dyslexia, what might be happening if a child is struggling to learn to read, how to tell when’s the right time to start teaching your kid to read, if there’s any danger in starting too early. Discover why the main way we’ve been teaching kids to read for the last 30 years is wrong, how did this come to be and what parents can do about it.

Resources to explore

Wild Learning : “At Wild Learning, we believe that the outdoor environment is the ideal classroom for children. Our curriculums, Wild Math and Wild Reading use nature as a tool for learning essential math and reading skills. Research has shown that learning outside can increase attention, is more engaging, and is naturally hands-on and multi-sensory”

Wild Math : “Wild Math reimagines math instruction for the natural outdoor environment. Fractions are modeled using mud pies, place value is introduced with bundles of sticks, multiplication is introduced by examining flower petals, and games replace worksheets.”

Wild Reading : “Wild Reading leads children through structured explicit instruction in phonological awareness skills, phonics, high frequency words, writing, reading comprehension, language and other key reading skills. Outdoor and hands on activities such as, word squares, scavenger hunts, mammal search, sit spots, and word hopscotch make learning active, hands-on, and fun.”

How to Talk So Kids Can Learn at Home and in School. “The leading experts on parent-child communication show parents and teachers how to motivate kids to learn and succeed in school.”
